Growing up in Bristol I took part in sponsored charity events and was a keen anti-apartheid supporter. As an older teenager I volunteered at the Julian Trust night shelter for the homeless in Bristol and organised a rock festival to raise money for them. Later I taught English in Chile, took part in a Raleigh International expedition to Namibia, and helped on several BTCV projects in England and other countries, including an art project for people with disabilities in Luxembourg, and various conservation activities at Sunseed Desert Technology in Spain. I now participate in a language cafe in which non-native Norwegian speakers, particularly refugees, meet to practise their Norwegian skills.
My 14-year career as a commercial oceanographer with Fugro was full of experiences. I learned about safety procedures through installing current meters on offshore oil and gas rigs and deploying deep water instrumentation moorings from vessels. I learned about different cultures, nationalities and beliefs through working in multicultural teams offshore and interacting with the locals in remote areas of countries such as Yemen and Indonesia, in the offices in Singapore and Houston, and through out-of-office activities such as playing hockey for the Singapore Cricket Club. I learned what not to do just as much as what to do.
I gave up the day job in 2009/2010 and have been working from home as a freelance copy-editor/proofreader ever since. I get to interact with clients from all over the world and have been involved in a range of exciting and interesting projects. One of my recent privileges was to work with Gisli Gudjonsson, CBE, Emeritus Professor of Forensic Psychology, King’s College London, on his 2018 book on The Psychology of False Confessions, which includes a detailed analysis of the Reykjavik confessions. My hobbies include walking and yoga.
I enjoy working for different types of clients including businesses, institutions and scientists as well as traditional academic publishers, and some of my projects are listed on these pages.
